- Blue tsunami: Trump and Republicans’ crushing defeat in the elections. What it means and what might come next
▶Since the morning of November 4, the USA has been living in a new reality. What politicians-Democrats and their supporters hoped for—a blue wave—turned out to be a blue tsunami.
Trump and the Republicans suffered a literally epic, absolutely crushing defeat in the elections.
Democrats won the elections in both chambers of Congress.
In the Senate, they took 7 seats from the Republicans—in Texas, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine, and Iowa.
In two more states—Mississippi and Alaska—Democratic candidates are ahead of their opponents, incumbent Republican senators, leading by a very small margin. In these cases, they have to wait for all the ballots to be processed to know the winners. But even without these states, the Democrats won very convincingly.
In the Senate of the 120th Congress, they will have at least 54 senators out of 100. If Democratic candidates win in Mississippi and/or Alaska, this number could rise to 55 or 56.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats are projected by the media to have between 250 and 260 deputies out of 435. While vote counting continues in 32 districts, based on the final results known as of Wednesday evening, Democrats have at least 245 guaranteed seats in the House of Representatives. They have already taken 35 districts from Republicans.
For the first time in many years, Democrats will be governors in most states in the country. They took governor positions from Republicans in Texas, Georgia, Ohio, and Iowa. Vote counting is still ongoing in Kansas, where the results in the gubernatorial elections are very close, requiring every ballot to be counted. Democratic candidate Cindy Holscher leads there by a margin of 0.6% after processing 98.8% of the ballots.
These elections, even before the vote counting is complete, have made history.
To some, my next conclusion may seem unexpected, but they have made history primarily because America, I believe, has begun the process of healing from the illness that overtook it with the rise of Trump in politics, which in turn became a complication of the lingering illness that started with Gingrich’s far-right “revolution” in the early 1990s. I truly hope I’m right and that the healing process will continue.
Why does this seem most important today? Look at the election results in Texas and Kansas. Texas is a stronghold of the Republican Party. When the country was divided into “blue,” Democratic and “red,” Republican states in the 1990s, Texas became the main red state. It is the second-largest state after California in terms of population, voter count, and the number of electors in the Electoral College that elects the president. Since 1988, Republicans have won in Texas in all federal elections. The more the Republican Party moved towards the far-right end of the political spectrum, the more it regarded Texas as its impregnable fortress, a citadel guaranteeing them two Senate seats, 40 seats in the Electoral College, and the post of influential governor. On November 3, 2026, this story came to an end. Texas, with a majority of 12% of the vote (about a million votes), elected Democrats as their senator (James Talarico) and governor (Gina Hinokosa). It became a swing state. Why? Precisely because a significant portion of people who had always voted Republican there, based on family tradition, following their conservative views, without considering the real qualities and programs of the candidates, decided to vote based on values. On those values that the USA is founded upon.
The same happened in Kansas, where Democrats hadn’t won a Senate election since 1932. And now Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton confidently won with a good margin.
And here’s what Adam Hamilton shared on Wednesday morning in an interview with MS NOW. A few days ago, at a meeting with voters, an elderly man approached him and said that these would be the 46th elections in which he would vote. He had been a lifelong Republican and voted in all elections only for Republicans and for one reason only—because they were Republicans. But now, the voter told Hamilton, I will vote for you. Because you are a worthy person, true to our values. And what is happening now in Washington, in the upper echelons of power, is unworthy and shameful.
About two weeks ago, I released a piece based on survey results regarding Americans’ attitudes towards different issues. Remember what concerned people the most? Not gas and supermarket prices. 80-85% of Americans consider corruption in the highest levels of power the country’s main problem. Because corruption is a great evil. Because it contradicts all the values on which the US is founded. Because it flourished in the Trump White House on an unprecedented scale in the nation’s history.
The majority of Americans cannot agree with this evil and tolerate it. They cannot agree that thugs in uniform, sent by the president, can cold-bloodedly kill people on the streets of American cities. They cannot agree that their president can start an illegal and unprepared war. They cannot agree that their elected representatives in Congress do not react to all this or worse, vote in support of all this evil.
The “Gingrich Revolution,” this entire ultra-right march that began in the US in the early 1990s and reached its peak in the MAGA movement and with Trump’s entry into politics, is a cold civil war (as defined by the legendary journalist Carl Bernstein, who investigated Watergate with Bob Woodward). A war between the past and the future. A war between that past where there was the power of white men, where these white men had women who were obedient to them in everything, where these white men had slaves. A war of the past with the future, where all people are free, where all people have equal rights and opportunities, where the dignity of every person is respected, where liberal democracy, human rights and freedoms, equal for all people, equality of all before the law, are the most important values.
As a result of these elections, not just Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and Ohio became swing states. Americans, a significant majority of them, showed that they do not want to go into the past.
In these elections, a lot of people, millions of people in the most literal sense (I remind you that in Texas alone, Talarico and Hinojosa surpassed their opponents by about a million votes) took a very decisive step into the future. For the first time in the country’s history, a Black woman and a woman of Latino descent were elected as governors. For the first time in the country’s history, a Muslim and an openly gay person became senators.
Those who want to go to the past insist that only white men, accompanied by faithful wives (“family values”), can govern the state. Those who want to move into the future vote for those who offer the best ways to solve problems and whom they can trust to solve complex issues.
Trump and billionaires seeking to turn the U.S. into an oligarchy, primarily Musk, thought they could buy power. Musk alone spent nearly half a billion dollars supporting Republican election propaganda on TV and social media. But he couldn’t buy Americans with this propaganda of hatred.
In his inaugural speech on January 20, 2021, Joe Biden called on the country to heal from division and unite around common values. It took Trump’s second coming to the White House for the country to realize the abyss it was heading into, and this fall, if not stopped, would become irreversible.
The fall has been stopped. And there is hope that from this moment on, healing will truly begin.
The morning of Wednesday, November 4, marked the beginning of an entirely new reality.
Donald Trump prematurely became a lame duck. This is how in America they refer to presidents in the last 6-8 months of their second term when the country is focused on electing a new president, and they are no longer concerned with the current one, and he is no longer the leader of his own party.
The 47th president not only lost the majority in Congress. A devastating defeat in the elections immediately deprived him of much. He was used to feeling omnipotent—not a king but a semblance of a dictator (after all, he wants so much to resemble Putin, as testified by Fiona Hill, who worked with him during his first term in the National Security Council and frequently interacted with him).
But now Republicans in the new Congress will be focused on finding a new presidential candidate; some will want to try themselves in this role, and many of them will no longer wait for his commands, obediently executing his every whim. He will face dissent from a number of Republicans even in the current Congress. Too many of them lost their established seats in the Capitol because they agreed to his every insane demand. His control over the Republican Party will continue to rapidly wane.
He will no longer be able to do as he pleases, and the new Congress will force him to do what he does not want to do.
He faces investigations that the Judiciary and Oversight Committees of the House of Representatives will conduct from the first days of the new Congress. All his corrupt deals, all the poorly disguised bribes he received, all his and his family’s stock trading using his tweets that caused the stock market to rise and fall, all his criminal deals with Putin on the blood — all this will be investigated. And Musk, Witkoff, Kushner, his ministers, the Attorney General, all of them will have to appear before Congress and under oath on live television tell the country and the world about all this chaos. He understands this.
He will no longer be able to appoint ministers like Hegseth, Kennedy, and others, an Attorney General like Blanche, prosecutors like his other former lawyers, ambassadors like Kushner’s father. The Senate will not even consider confirming such appointments. The Senate will not consider appointing judges who cannot answer the question of who won the 2020 elections, and far more substantive legal questions.
He understands that he lost. Understands that this defeat is crushing. He understands that he cannot fight the election results. He simply has no real opportunities to do so precisely because this is not just a defeat — it is a tsunami that in one evening wiped out his entire authoritarian-corrupt project.
And the rest of the world also understands that the 47th has become a lame duck. He remains the President of the United States, with all formal powers. But with sharply reduced possibilities.

There are 808 days left until the end of the story called “Fear: Trump in the White House” © (the title of Bob Woodward’s book, published in 2018).
Thank you to everyone who read this. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Take care of each other, help each other. Health to all.
Ultimately, what happens in the world depends on us. On whether we fight evil, do good, remain mere observers, wait passively and believe that someone somewhere will decide something for us, or we fight evil and do everything possible for Good to prevail.
We must not allow evil to win. The victory of evil would mean the end of the world we live in. We cannot allow this. Especially now.
Ukrainian Friends, I embrace and love you all. Please take care of each other.
Ukraine is and always will be.
And evil will be defeated and punished. And this is certain.
