▶ Three days remain until the day when Americans must decide where their country will move next. Will it remain a democracy, or will it inevitably drift towards a right-wing authoritarian regime?
The significance of the midterm elections, as the Congressional elections are called in the US when held between presidential elections, in 2026 is not just greater than the significance of all midterm elections in the recent history of the US. The importance of the current elections cannot be overstated precisely because Americans have to decide what will happen to the country next.
This decision will be made by everyone. Those who clearly understand that the main question of the current elections is precisely this. Those who have their ideological, political beliefs – liberals, conservatives, socialists, neo-fascists. And those who have no convictions and vote based solely on gas and supermarket prices. And those who are committed to the values on which the United States is founded – values of freedom, democracy, human rights, equal rights for all people, the rule of law, and equality of all before the law. And those who do not feel or understand these values.
As of Saturday morning, more than 50 million Americans have voted early or by mail. This is much higher than is usually the case in midterm elections, when voter turnout is typically lower than in presidential elections.
Compared to the previous midterm elections in 2022, three days before the official election day, 50% more voters have voted in Texas (6.3 million), 30% more in Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, and Kansas. These are all states where it will be decided who wins the Senate elections. South Carolina joined these states in the last week, where Democrat Annie Andrews is polling level with Republican Darlene Graham, the sister of the late Senator Graham, nominated by Trump to take his place in the Senate. In South Carolina, the number of early voters increased by 83% compared to 2022.
Such active voter participation indicates that many people understand these are not ordinary midterm elections, deciding not only who will represent districts or states in Congress. A much more global question is at stake: what will happen to the country next. Will it continue to fall into the abyss, as voted by 49.8% of voters on November 5, 2024, or will it manage to stop this fall.
▶ The election campaign continues. Candidates continue to meet with voters, speak at rallies, on TV channels if invited, and ask for money necessary for campaigning. Inflation affects not only prices at gas stations and supermarkets but also the costs of political advertising on TV and social media, renting premises, and organizing election rallies.
One trillionaire, 49 billionaires, and companies spent a record $2.77 billion on the campaigns of the parties and candidates they support. The Republican Party and its candidates received much more money from their wealthy sponsors than the Democrats. Republicans received $1.67 billion from their richest donors. About 25% of this amount—$446 million—was spent to support Republican candidates by the world’s only trillionaire, Elon Musk.
Democrats raised $832 million from major donors—twice less than the Republicans. The largest financial donors for the Democrats were George Soros ($102 million) and Michael Bloomberg ($84.2 million).
▶ Republicans led by Trump label Democrats as socialists, communists, Marxists, and left-wing radicals in their political advertising and rallies. Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, Abud El-Sayed, was simultaneously labeled a “communist,” “jihadist,” and a member of the “Muslim Brotherhood.”
For the past two weeks, Trump has been traveling nonstop across the country, speaking at rallies with his supporters in red, Republican states and in Michigan. He and Republican congressional candidates claim that Democrats will take away people’s guns, ban them from eating meat, kidnap their children and forcibly change all children’s genders, raise taxes, and advocate for men to participate in women’s sports. The 47th president adds that if people vote for Democrats, “they will take away our country.” Trump and Republican candidates promise that “prices will soon drop,” with Trump stating that “our country is thriving like never before.” The content of Republican political ads, which flood television and social media, needn’t even be mentioned. This current campaign is almost entirely fabricated, demonizing Democratic candidates.
Media reports indicate that many Republican candidates privately complain that Trump is hindering rather than helping them, as he mobilizes his base while alienating other voters. Trump has the lowest presidential approval rating in history right before the midterm elections—about a third of voters support the 47th president’s activities, according to polls.
Democrats do not have a center defining a common campaign platform. Candidates conduct their campaigns in their districts and states, focusing primarily on the issues concerning their residents. The thing is, these issues are generally of a global nature, just affecting different states and districts to varying extents.
Inflation is at 3.4%, and rising prices are eating away at Americans’ savings. This is supported by statistics. Wage growth lags behind price increases. More than a million people lost their health insurance in 2026. Even more people are expected to lose their insurance soon due to ongoing price increases as a result of measures implemented by Republicans at the president’s request in their main bill, passed with their votes in 2025 – “one big beautiful law” (or “one big terrible law,” as Democrats call it).
Polls show that Americans are most concerned not about prices, but about corruption in the federal government. According to various polls, 80-85% of people cite corruption at the highest levels of government as the main issue that worries them.
Democratic candidates are talking to people about the problems that concern them, saying that Republicans do not want to solve these issues; that on the contrary, the president and Republicans are the cause of these problems, primarily the issue of corruption generated by the president himself and the Republicans supporting him in Congress.
People are, of course, concerned about the economy – their personal economy and how it is linked to the country’s economy.
▶ The growth of the American GDP in annual terms in the third quarter, according to data published a few days ago, was 3.4%, which seemingly is quite good. However, this growth is mainly due to the extensive expansion of companies developing artificial intelligence systems. It’s extensive because companies are expanding their systems broadly rather than deeply, purchasing vast amounts of computer and other technological equipment.
Their extensive expansion was recently compared to the internet business bubble of the late 1990s and early 2000s on Friday by the American stock market. On Friday, the Nasdaq Composite index – a weighted sum of shares of the largest high-tech companies – fell. A drop of even 1% is generally considered a crash, and on Friday, there was a 2.9% drop. The S&P 500 index – a weighted sum of shares of the largest 500 American companies – fell by 1.8% on Friday, and the Dow Jones index – a weighted sum of shares of the largest 30 American companies – fell by 1.1% on Friday.
The U.S. national debt, exceeding $40 trillion, has equaled the country’s GDP. This hasn’t happened since World War II. However, it’s understandable why the government had to borrow money during a world war. But in the five years and nearly ten months of Trump’s presidency, the national debt increased by more than $13 trillion. A third of the enormous U.S. national debt is the result of the policy of the 45th, and later the 47th, president. The tax cuts on the incomes of billionaires and large corporations, twice passed at his request by Republicans in Congress, did not contribute to economic development. It contributed to the enrichment of the wealthiest 1% of Americans and their corporations, and resulted in a shortfall of funds necessary to finance the federal budget. The U.S. budget deficit reached a record $2 trillion in 2026 (excluding 2020, when the government was forced to support the economy and citizens during the pandemic, and the deficit was higher that year). The $2 trillion is what the budget missed due to the tax cuts on the incomes of billionaires and big corporations, these are the funds the government is forced to borrow, increasing the national debt.
This is the cornerstone of the policy of Republican presidents and their administrations, which reached its peak during the Trump era.
▶ The State Department announced on Friday that it approved the sale of 500 PAC-3 missiles for PATRIOT systems to Ukraine. To clarify: this concerns future deliveries, which may occur at an uncertain time in the distant future.
Lockheed Martin, the sole manufacturer of these missiles, produces 60 missiles per month. The U.S. has just over 800 of these missiles against a Pentagon-set standard of 2000 (over 1200 missiles were expended from February 28 to April 8 during the hottest phase of the war with Iran). Without fear of error, it can be said that until the U.S. restores its missile stock, which will take about 20 months, they are unlikely to sell these missiles to other countries.
At the same time, it is known that the Trump administration has long delayed the approval of PAC-3 transfers to Ukraine by European countries that have them in service. Approval is necessary because these are American-made missiles.
▶ The US invited Russian Ribbentrop Lavrov to the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta. European foreign ministers boycotted all events with his participation, refusing even the joint protocol photograph of 20 ministers. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rubio met with Lavrov. There’s really nothing to comment on here. And don’t think Rubio is the only “adult” in the Trump administration. There are no “adults” there. There are loyal servants ready to execute any command from the boss. And there are people who have buried the basic sense of dignity, lacking even a drop of self-respect. Rubio belongs to this category. Not to the “adults.” That’s how he’ll go down in history.
There are 812 days left until the end of the story called “Fear: Trump in the White House” © (title of Bob Woodward’s book, published in 2018).
American friends, vote. Remember that the fate of the USA, the fate of Ukraine, and the fate of the whole world depend on your votes.
Remember that the agenda of each chamber of Congress and its committees is entirely determined by the party with the majority in the chamber.
The next detailed issue of American news will be on Wednesday, November 4, when the election results become known. Late in the evening on election day and the night after, there will definitely be brief releases with results known at the time of their publication.
Thank you to everyone who read. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Take care of each other, help each other. Health to all.
Ultimately, what happens in the world depends on us. On whether we fight evil, do Good, remain just observers, wait passively and believe that someone somewhere will decide something for us, or fight evil and do everything possible for Good to triumph.
We must not allow evil to triumph. The victory of evil would mean the end of the world we live in. We cannot allow this. Especially now.
Ukrainian friends, I embrace and love you all. Take care of each other, I ask you very much.
Ukraine is and will always be.
And evil will be defeated and punished. And it will definitely happen.
