Washington reinstated full sanctions on Russian oil

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump did not extend the temporary exemption from sanctions on Russian oil, which was in effect amid the crisis in the Persian Gulf.

This is reported by the agency Bloomberg.

The expiration of the exemption means the actual return to a full sanctions regime against Russian oil exports.

The exemption was introduced in March and applied only to oil already loaded onto tankers.

In Washington, this step was explained by the need to stabilize markets amid the escalation in the Middle East. At the same time, it sparked criticism among European allies, who insist on maximum pressure on Russia’s energy revenues.

Some countries, including India and Indonesia, urged the U.S. to extend the exemptions due to risks to global oil supplies amid the regional conflict and restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, Trump stated that sanctions against Russian oil would be reinstated after the Middle East crisis was resolved.

A month ago, the U.S. extended the exemption from sanctions on the sale of Russian oil.
