On Direct, they discussed the Ukrainian-American relations crisis, the danger of agreements behind Ukraine’s back, and our path to the EU.
Key points:
• We need a just and lasting peace, and this goal should guide dialogue with Washington. Its result should be Patriot missiles, weapons, intelligence, and protected Ukrainian cities. Personal disputes between leaders should not endanger these vital matters.
• America is institutions. It is necessary to work simultaneously with the White House, both parties in Congress, and the American national security system. Restore mechanisms of strategic partnership. Election results may change the composition of Congress, but not who sits in the White House. It is a dangerous illusion to expect an automatic resolution of our problems.
• The formula for our success is a strong Europe together with the USA. Europeans must maintain and strengthen sanctions pressure on Russia. Ukrainian diplomacy must work on restoring transatlantic unity. The Kremlin benefits most from any split between our partners.
• The idea of a Trump, Xi, and Putin meeting hides the risk of a new division of spheres of influence. It is unacceptable to decide Ukraine and Europe’s security without Ukraine and Europe. The path to peace must start with a complete, unconditional, and comprehensive ceasefire. Moscow’s refusal should have a price.
• EU membership should be approached by fulfilling obligations. Rule of law, judicial independence, democratic institutions, and media freedom are the foundation of our accession. European requirements are not a restaurant menu from which you can choose only convenient items.
Diplomatic restraint does not mean weakness. True diplomacy is the ability to predict consequences many steps ahead and achieve results for one’s country.
Less emotion. More professionalism. More decisions that strengthen Ukraine and save lives.
