Manual populism

Manual populism
Nina Yuzhanina

The President reported that he instructed the government and the Prime Minister to prepare a decision regarding fair payment for heating for people who actually didn’t have it. Quote: “If there was no heating, there should be no bills.”

Honestly? I’m surprised. Even shocked.

So, were we always billed for services not received, and this surprised no one?

So, is the issue of recalculating for a missing service now at the level of the President, and not the responsibility of companies, regulators, local authorities, the government as an institution?

The President substitutes for all branches of government at once.

And this is no longer the exception — it is the system. Almost every day we read:
– “The government made a decision…”,
– “The government gave…”,
– “The government ensured…”.

As if nothing works by default without a special political gesture or appeal. As if normal performance of duties must always be sold to people as a feat.

Asking to stop this endless populist bravado is probably futile.

It’s enough to recall the election program of this administration: a set of beautiful words, billions, trillions, and “4,000 euro salaries” that always go over well.

But there’s one thing that should be talked about constantly.

We hold on not thanks to “instructions.” We survive thanks to the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of those on the front line. Those who have borne the hardest fate all these years.

We would like respect.
For the military — first of all.
And for civilians — too. Because the civilian population is not “fools” that can be sold obvious, obligatory state actions as extraordinary care.

And the country’s governance cannot continue to be built in a mode of manual populism, especially during a war!
