Today, the European Parliament, by an absolute majority, supported Ukraine in the war against Russia and stood up for democracy in Ukraine, including against illegal personal sanctions on the opposition leader.
This resolution clearly states: a fair peace is possible only under the conditions of respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. No compromises on our right to self-defense, no veto rights for Russia on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and NATO.
Especially importantly, the European Parliament confirmed that Ukraine’s future lies in the European Union. This is undoubtedly a guideline for the Ukrainian authorities.
The European Parliament emphasizes that any restrictions on rights and freedoms imposed in extraordinary circumstances should not be permanent. They must be regularly reviewed and, where possible, gradually eased in accordance with the development of the situation. According to the resolution, elections in Ukraine should be held only after the martial law is lifted and with strict adherence to international standards.
Equally important, the resolution sets clear demands regarding Ukraine’s internal policy. The European Parliament emphasizes the need for unconditional adherence to the principles of rule of law, political pluralism, respect for the opposition, and no use of law enforcement as tools of political pressure.
European deputies directly demand that Ukrainian authorities refrain from politically motivated persecution of the opposition, personal sanctions against the opposition leader and representatives of civil society. This deserves special attention from the Ukrainian authorities, particularly to warn them against attempts to pressure the court.
The European Parliament separately reiterates its concern about restrictions on foreign travel for Ukrainian MPs and again recommends lifting travel restrictions for MPs related to mandate and political activity.
The European Parliament reacted to an interview with D.B.R. Director Sukachev. The resolution also demands the immediate reform and reset of D.B.R., S.B.U., and other law enforcement agencies according to European standards of independence, accountability, and rule of law. The resolution demands reducing opportunities for political or administrative influence on specific cases.
The resolution warns that any rollback in anti-corruption reforms will seriously undermine public trust and Ukraine’s European integration path. The European Parliament insists that the Ukrainian authorities must ensure the institutional and operational independence of NABU and SAP. This means these bodies must be protected from political interference, instrumentalization, intimidation, unwarranted inspections, criminal prosecution, or artificial operational limitations. A particularly important signal concerns pressure from law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The European Parliament directly demands the immediate cessation of undue pressure on anti-corruption institutions, particularly by the Security Service of Ukraine.
A separate block of the resolution concerns freedom of speech and media independence. The European Parliament calls on Ukraine to continue supporting freedom of expression and media independence. At the same time, it underscores that any restrictions related to martial law must be strictly necessary and proportionate. And not to disconnect opposition television channels from broadcasting.
Separately, I welcome the European Parliament’s call to strengthen sanctions against Russia. The aggressor must be deprived of all resources to continue the war, and frozen Russian assets should work towards Ukraine’s reconstruction.
I am also pleased that the resolution includes our team’s initiative to urge EU member states to supply Ukraine with weapons, ammunition, air defense systems, missiles for Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS, IRIS-T, and HAWK more swiftly. The necessity of providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles was also mentioned.
The European Parliament once again confirmed: Ukraine’s path to victory, fair peace, and full membership in the European Union is irreversible.
Our task is to accomplish our part, strengthen democracy, the rule of law, and unity in Ukrainian society.
Ukraine was, is, and will be part of a united Europe.
