Will there ever be real negotiations with Russia?

Will there ever be real negotiations with Russia?
Vitaly Portnikov

I have no doubt that in real negotiations, a criminal shelling of the civilian population is a reason to refuse their continuation and other diplomatic demarches.

But the problem is that what we observe today are not real negotiations, but attempts by Ukraine and its European allies to prevent the Trump administration from accusing Kyiv of unwillingness to achieve peace, exiting the process, and even stopping assistance to Ukraine.

Therefore, in reality, we are negotiating with the Americans. The Russians are there as furniture, and they have the same task as we do—to convince Trump of their peacefulness by their very presence. The fact that Washington prefers not to notice the shelling of Ukraine during negotiations is on the conscience of their American participants.

And finally: will real negotiations with Russia ever happen? The objective preconditions for this are practically absent in the coming years. Even in the case of a significant reduction in the economic and military potential of the opponent. We are more likely to deal with the gradual fading of the war, and our main efforts should be aimed at exhausting Russian resources.

Participation in an imitated negotiation process to prevent the US from refusing to pressure Moscow is an essential part of such actions.

It was reported that trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the USA started in Abu Dhabi.

And now it should be like this: if the Russians attempt another strike on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, primarily energy, as they say, “to strengthen their negotiating position,” immediately stand up from the table and walk out!

Provided, of course, that members of the Ukrainian delegation, as we were told, “have steel balls.”

Negotiations about peace cannot happen under shelling and the killing of civilians! Russians must not be allowed to drag out time and try to continue as it was.

This is called diplomacy. We wish success to the Ukrainian delegation in the negotiations!

I understand that today’s missiles and UAVs flew in directly from the “peaceful” talks table in Abu Dhabi? Where the delegations of Ukraine, the USA, and Russia were discussing something the previous evening.

Usually, during negotiations, active combat operations are suspended. But only if all parties want to reach an agreement. Here, Russia clearly showed that it does not intend to end the war.

If Zelensky cannot fulfill the promise to arrange a blackout in Moscow in response to a blackout in Kyiv, then the delegation can stand up and walk out of such negotiations. The Americans will understand because all these negotiating tables are not for making peace, but to create the appearance and drag out time by the Kremlin. Therefore, the USA has every reason to impose hellish sanctions against the Russian Federation. But does Trump have the political will to show America as truly strong?

There is no point in talking to Putin’s terrorist regime. The civilized world must press the scum.
